Zverev Survives Halys Scare in Shanghai to Claim 60th Win of 2026, Eyes Year-End World No. 1
Top-seeded Alexander Zverev came through a nervy 6-4, 6-7(8), 6-3 third-round battle against Quentin Halys at the Shanghai Masters, reaching 60 wins for the season and staying on course to finish the year as world No. 1 for the first time.

Alexander Zverev flirted with danger at the Shanghai Masters on Sunday before steadying himself to beat Quentin Halys 6-4, 6-7(8), 6-3 and record his 60th tour-level win of 2026. The US Open champion appeared in total control after cruising through the opening set, but the big-serving Frenchman refused to fold. Halys saved two match points in a dramatic second-set tiebreak and snatched it with an overhead winner at the net, dragging the top seed into a decider. Zverev responded immediately, breaking Halys's first service game of the third set and never looking back over two hours and 17 minutes — remarkably, without facing a single break point in the match. The milestone victory is the third time Zverev has passed 60 wins in a season, following 2018 and 2024. He remains unbeaten in four meetings with Halys this year, including a five-set duel in the second round at Flushing Meadows. With world No. 1 Jannik Sinner sitting out the rest of 2026 through a knee injury, the German is closing in on a first year-end top ranking. "I feel like this year I've been picking my places where I want to peak," Zverev said. "I won two Grand Slams and peaked at the right moments." Zverev also praised his opponent's serve, calling the 6-foot-7 Frenchman "probably the best server in men's tennis right now." He next faces Alexander Bublik in the round of 16.
