Zverev's World No. 1 Dream Stalls as Djokovic Keeps Sinner Safe at the Top
Alexander Zverev's bid to become world No. 1 during the Asian swing ended with his Beijing quarter-final loss to Djokovic, guaranteeing Jannik Sinner stays on top through Shanghai.

Alexander Zverev's pursuit of the world No. 1 ranking has been put on hold. The German needed back-to-back titles in Beijing and Shanghai to dethrone Jannik Sinner during the Asian swing, but his 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 quarter-final defeat to Novak Djokovic ended the immediate chase.
With Sinner absent from the autumn Asian events, an opening had appeared at the top of the rankings — but Djokovic slammed it shut, denying Zverev the 500 points that would have come with the Beijing crown. As a result, Sinner is guaranteed to remain No. 1 through the end of the Shanghai Masters.
The race is not over, though. If Zverev can win Shanghai, the gap to Sinner would shrink to just 100 points heading into the European indoor season. The mathematics favour the German down the stretch: Sinner must defend 3,000 ranking points across Vienna, Paris and the ATP Finals, while Zverev is defending only 980 over the same stretch.
Vienna and Paris will be battlegrounds. For now, the No. 1 crown stays with Sinner — but the pressure is about to intensify.
