Women’s tennis has found a new home for one of its biggest weeks of the year.

And this time, the plan isn’t just to arrive, play the tournament and move somewhere else again.

The WTA announced that Charlotte will host the WTA Finals from 2027 through 2029, with the season-ending championship being played inside Spectrum Center, the home arena of the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets.

For Charlotte, it’s a major addition to the city’s sporting calendar.

For the WTA, it looks like something bigger — an attempt to finally give its season finale a home where the tournament can build its own identity year after year.

The WTA Finals are different from a normal week on tour.

You don’t simply enter.

Players have to earn their way there throughout the season, with the leading singles players and doubles teams qualifying through their performances across the year. That means when the tournament begins, almost every match feels important because the field is filled with players who have spent an entire season proving they belong there.

Charlotte will now get that stage for at least three years.

The plans also go beyond what happens on the court. The WTA says additional programming will take place at the Charlotte Convention Center, while Reuters reports that a fan festival is part of the plan surrounding the championship.

There’s another significant part of the announcement too.

The WTA plans to relocate its global headquarters to Charlotte, meaning the relationship between the tour and the city is intended to extend well beyond one tournament each year.

Before Charlotte takes over, however, there is still another chapter to play.

The 2026 WTA Finals will be held at Indian Wells in California. Charlotte’s three-year run begins the following season.

The Finals have moved through several cities and countries over the years. A permanent-feeling home has sometimes been difficult to establish.

Charlotte now gets an opportunity to change that.

If everything works as planned, fans won’t just think of Charlotte as another stop on the WTA calendar.

They may eventually think of it as the place where the women’s tennis season finishes.
