Volkanovski Willing to Give Up Featherweight Crown for Lightweight Shot
Alexander Volkanovski says he would vacate his featherweight title if granted a lightweight title fight, a rare champion-led gamble that could reshape the UFC's divisions.

Alexander Volkanovski has confirmed he would vacate his featherweight title if the UFC grants him a shot at the lightweight crown, a striking public gamble from a champion who has already defended the 145-pound belt five times. The 36-year-old Australian's position is unusual: rather than holding two belts at once, as Conor McGregor and Daniel Cormier once did, he is offering to surrender his existing throne before the new one is secured. The logic is clear. Volkanovski has cleared out the featherweight division to a degree that makes compelling title defences scarce, and the fights that move the needle are at lightweight: a rematch with Islam Makhachev, or a clash with Justin Gaethje. If he loses at 155 pounds, he would return to featherweight as just another contender, with no belt to fall back on. The timing matters. Arman Tsarukyan was expected to challenge Makhachev next, but reports suggest his title shot could be in jeopardy after UFC 333, which would make Volkanovski the most credible replacement. Volkanovski carries the mileage of three wars with Max Holloway and a knockout loss to Makhachev at lightweight in February 2023, but his campaign shows a champion willing to bet everything on one more defining fight.
