Vincent Kompany Hospitalized After Collapsing at Bayern Munich Training

Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany was hospitalized on Friday morning after collapsing at the club's Säbener Straße training ground, the German champions confirmed.

The 40-year-old Belgian was observing a reserve-team session when he collapsed. Bayern said in a statement that Kompany "will remain under medical care" and that his coaching staff will oversee training and match activities "until further notice." Sporting director Max Eberl stressed that the coach's health was "our top priority."

The episode follows a difficult week for Kompany, who missed Tuesday's training session and press conference with a viral infection before taking his place in the dugout for Wednesday's 2-2 Champions League draw with Arsenal. After that match, he admitted he had been ignoring signals from his body.

The timing could hardly be worse for Bayern, who face SC Freiburg in the Bundesliga on Sunday, October 25, still unbeaten this season and leading the table. No further details about his condition have been released, and the club asked for privacy as medical examinations continue.
