Tenerife Striker Jesus de Miguel Dies at 30 After On-Field Collision

Spanish football is in mourning after CD Tenerife announced the death of striker Jesus de Miguel on Tuesday morning at the age of 30. The club confirmed he died at 8:00 a.m., a day after collapsing during Monday's Segunda Division match against FC Andorra. De Miguel suffered a cardiac arrest following a collision with Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono seven minutes into stoppage time, with the game level at 2-2, and the match was abandoned as medics treated him on the pitch for more than five minutes before he was taken to hospital. Owono had rushed out of his area towards midfield to clear a long ball and struck De Miguel in the chest with his knee. The goalkeeper was shown a straight red card for excessive force. De Miguel was admitted to intensive care, but his neurological condition deteriorated on Tuesday morning. The Spanish Football Federation postponed all matches scheduled for Tuesday, including Copa del Rey and Copa de la Reina ties, while UEFA announced a minute's silence before all European games this week. Spanish police have opened a routine judicial investigation into a possible involuntary manslaughter, which authorities stressed is standard procedure for any non-natural death. The chief prosecutor in Santa Cruz de Tenerife said criminal proceedings against Owono were very unlikely, noting injuries in sporting events typically do not carry criminal liability. De Miguel, born in Madrid in 1996, joined Tenerife from Castellon ahead of last season and scored 11 goals in that campaign.
