The Dallas Stars have recalled rookie defenseman Trey Taylor, who is set to make his NHL debut on Thursday when Dallas hosts the Montreal Canadiens. The move, reported on Thursday afternoon, sees Dallas turn to the physical blueliner to bolster a depleted defense ahead of a demanding matchup with a Canadiens side coming off an appearance in the Eastern Conference Finals. The call-up comes after depth defenseman Kyle Capobianco went down with an injury and forward Dylan Hryckowian was sent down to the AHL to clear roster space. Some had expected former second-round pick Tristan Bertucci to get the call and finally earn some NHL minutes, but the Stars went in another direction, tapping Taylor instead. The six-foot-two, 24-year-old Taylor is in his second full professional season after signing with the Stars organisation following three years at Clarkson University in the NCAA. He developed into a productive defender in college, going from eight points in his freshman year to 29 points in 39 games in his junior and final season. In his first full pro season with Texas, Taylor recorded eight goals and 18 assists for 26 points in 70 games, and this season he has three assists in eight games. He will now get his first taste of NHL action on Thursday night.
