Sri Lanka Pull Off Second-Highest Chase in ODI History to Stun England Despite Brook's Record Double Century

Sri Lanka produced one of the greatest run chases in one-day international history on Thursday, hunting down 430 to beat England by two wickets in the Pakistan ODI tri-series in Rawalpindi. Harry Brook had earlier rewritten the record books, becoming the first Englishman to score an ODI double century and reaching the milestone in just 114 balls — the fastest double hundred in ODI history. The England captain finished on 202 from 116 deliveries, with 21 fours and 10 sixes, powering England to 429-4 with support from Joe Root (69) and Will Jacks' unbeaten 66 from 30 balls. Despite slipping to 24-2, Sri Lanka fought back through a 166-run stand between Avishka Fernando (97) and Pavan Rathnayake, who made a superb 130. Dasun Shanaka then turned the game on its head with a blistering 97 from 50 balls, before Janith Liyanage's unbeaten 61 from 27 deliveries — including a six off the penultimate ball with six needed — sealed victory with one ball to spare. The match produced 847 runs, the second-highest aggregate in ODI history. It is only the third successful 400-plus chase in the format, behind South Africa's 435 against Australia in 2006. Brook dismissed his own landmark innings afterwards: "It has no value whatsoever in my eyes. We need to win our next two games to reach the final in Lahore."
