South Africa Rout Australia by an Innings and 31 Runs to Force Newlands Decider

South Africa produced a stunning turnaround at St George's Park on Thursday, beating Australia by an innings and 31 runs to level the three-match Test series 1-1 and set up a blockbuster decider at Newlands.

The Proteas' victory was built on one of the great captain's innings in South African history. Temba Bavuma's monumental 179 — made across 334 deliveries — rescued the hosts from 110 for 6 and powered a record-breaking 183-run eighth-wicket partnership with Simon Harmer (82). With Marco Jansen adding 85, South Africa declared on a formidable 425 for 9.

Australia's reply was catastrophic. Jansen ripped through the visitors with 5 for 33 as they were skittled for just 99 in 42.3 overs, and the follow-on was enforced. Forced to bat again, Australia showed more fight on the final day: opener Travis Head crafted a superb 121 from 190 balls with 15 boundaries, and nightwatchman Scott Boland frustrated the hosts with a gritty 40 off 166 deliveries.

But the mountain was too steep. Kagiso Rabada, back from injury, found the breakthrough with a superb spell of 4 for 77, while Wiaan Mulder chipped in with 3 for 64 as Australia were dismissed for 295 in 107.1 overs — racing against looming bad weather.

Steve Smith, battling a neck problem and batting at No. 7, fell for 3 — but not before becoming the 12th player to reach 11,000 Test runs. Anrich Nortje also sustained a groin injury for the hosts after equalling Brian McMillan's Test wicket tally.

The series is now squared at 1-1, with the deciding third Test starting at Newlands in Cape Town on Tuesday, October 27.
