Sourav Ganguly Takes Over as Delhi Capitals Head Coach for 2027 IPL

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly will take charge as head coach of Delhi Capitals for the 2027 Indian Premier League season, the franchise announced on Tuesday. Ganguly, 54, replaces Hemang Badani after Delhi finished sixth in the 2026 campaign.

One of Indian cricket's most influential figures, Ganguly played 113 Tests and 311 one-day internationals and later ran the sport in the country as BCCI president. He joined the Capitals family as an advisor in 2019 and served as the team's director of cricket in 2023 and 2024. His coaching debut came last year with the franchise's sister outfit, Pretoria Capitals, in South Africa's SA20 league.

"Delhi Capitals is a franchise very close to my heart," Ganguly said in a statement. "I am looking forward to working with the squad, the new season, and building a strong and fearless team."

The appointment hands one of the IPL's underachieving heavyweights a figure of genuine gravitas as it plots a way back into contention. Delhi have never lifted the IPL trophy despite years of heavy investment, and Ganguly's first assignment will be shaping a squad — and a mindset — capable of ending that wait.
