Tottenham finally showed some fight at Old Trafford on Saturday, salvaging a 1-1 draw against Manchester United despite playing the closing stages with 10 men.

United struck against the run of play through Bryan Mbeumo, who pounced to put the hosts ahead while Spurs were dominating possession. Tottenham's task grew harder when Rodrigo Bentancur was sent off for head-butting Luke Shaw, a moment that seemed to hand Carrick's side a much-needed win.

Instead, the visitors refused to fold. Roberto De Zerbi's men pushed relentlessly, and their persistence paid off in the 92nd minute when substitute Dominic Solanke rose to head home the equaliser, silencing the home crowd.

The result did little for either side's league position. Tottenham remain without a win from their opening six Premier League games — only the fourth time in the club's history they have endured such a start — despite spending more than £300 million in the summer transfer window. De Zerbi, however, was heartened by what he called the right spirit and character from his players, insisting that if they believe in his footballing ideas, wins will come.

For United, the mood was darker. Carrick's team have collected just six points from six matches, their worst start to a league campaign since 1986-87. Another victory slipped through their fingers, and questions over the manager's future will only grow louder.
