Smith Smashes Test Catch Record as Australia Pounce on Sloppy South Africa at Durban
Steve Smith became the most prolific catcher in Test history with four grabs on day three, inspiring Australia's bowlers as South Africa were bowled out for 284 in Durban, leaving the tourists 139 ahead at stumps.

Steve Smith carved his name into Test cricket's record books on Sunday, taking four catches on day three of the first Test against South Africa at Kingsmead in Durban to become the most prolific catcher in the format's history. The 37-year-old moved past England's Joe Root, whose mark of 220 had stood as the benchmark. Smith equalled it by pouching skipper Temba Bavuma for three, reading the reverse sweep early off Nathan Lyon, then broke it in spectacular fashion — diving across first slip in front of Matt Renshaw to dismiss David Bedingham for 49 off Pat Cummins. A stunning one-handed grab to remove Kyle Verreynne for 13, again off Lyon, took him to 222, and his fourth of the day, to end South Africa's innings, made it 223. Australia's attack fed off the energy. South Africa resumed on 27 for one but kept gifting wickets: Aiden Markram drove loosely for 37, Wiaan Mulder (30) and Tristan Stubbs (32) both fell hooking, and Marco Jansen's breezy 26 off 20 balls ended at mid-off. The last two wickets added 87 before the hosts were bowled out for 284, replying to Australia's 390. Bad light ended play early with Australia 33 without loss in their second innings — Nic Maddinson 17 not out, Travis Head on 10 — a lead of 139 with two days remaining.
