Smith Passes Fitness Test as Australia Sweat on Star Batter for Newlands Decider
Steve Smith came through a fitness test in Australia's final training session at Newlands on Monday, but captain Pat Cummins admitted the veteran may not be fully fit for Tuesday's series decider against South Africa.

Australia will head into Tuesday's series decider at Newlands with a question mark still hanging over Steve Smith. The 37-year-old underwent a fitness test during the team's final training session in Cape Town on Monday, batting for around 35 minutes in the nets and playing a range of shots, though reports said he favoured his neck at times and the discomfort lingered even when he took a break. Captain Pat Cummins, speaking at the pre-match press conference, conceded Smith may not be at his full potential for the match but backed the veteran to manage the problem as he has so often before. Cummins said Smith had looked in total control in the first Test until one ball found the outside edge, and described him as one of the greatest batters Australia has ever produced, noting that a player with more than 100 Tests behind him has regularly played matches while less than fully fit. The decider, running from October 27 to 31, will settle a series locked at 1-1 after Australia won the Durban opener by 214 runs and South Africa hit back with an innings-and-31-run victory in Gqeberha, where Temba Bavuma's 179 powered the hosts. South Africa have already confirmed their XI, with Gerald Coetzee returning to Test cricket after almost two years in place of Anrich Nortje. For Australia, Smith's availability could prove decisive: his experience in a winner-takes-all Test is exactly what the tourists need, but a half-fit great is a gamble Cummins must weigh before the toss.
