Schaefer Strikes 33 Seconds Into OT as Islanders Stun Wild

Matthew Schaefer needed just 33 seconds of overtime to end it. The 19-year-old defenceman scored his second goal of the night to lift the New York Islanders to a 4-3 win against the Minnesota Wild at Grand Casino Arena on Thursday, capping a three-point performance and sending the Isles home with consecutive wins. Schaefer also had an assist, while Bo Horvat scored on the power play and Adam Pelech added a third-period goal as the Islanders finished their three-game trip through the Central Division with four of a possible six points. Ilya Sorokin made 22 saves. Quinn Hughes had a goal and an assist, and Joel Eriksson Ek and Matt Boldy scored for the Wild, who had won three straight. Eriksson Ek opened the scoring just 27 seconds into the first period, and Boldy forced overtime with a goal with 3:53 remaining in regulation, but Schaefer had the final word. Minnesota lost its first home game of the season, having started 4-0-1 in St. Paul, while Jesper Wallstedt stopped 22 of 26 shots. There was a worrying note for New York, with defenceman Ryan Pulock leaving the game early in the first period with an upper-body injury after just two shifts.
