Russell Fastest in Lone Singapore Practice Despite Back-of-Grid Penalty
George Russell topped the only practice session of Formula 1's first Singapore sprint weekend, outpacing Charles Leclerc by two tenths — even though a power-unit penalty will send him to the back of Sunday's grid.

George Russell made the most of his one hour of running at the Singapore Grand Prix, setting the pace in Friday's sole practice session with a 1:32.274 that left Charles Leclerc's Ferrari 0.198 seconds adrift. Lando Norris was third for McLaren, ahead of Lewis Hamilton, Oscar Piastri and Max Verstappen, who was the fastest of the medium-tyre runners in sixth after a radio failure briefly sent him back to the Red Bull garage.
The session carried an unusual subplot inside the Mercedes garage. Russell is running the team's older-spec front wing while championship leader Kimi Antonelli — seventh fastest, 1.251 seconds back on mediums — evaluates the new package, as Mercedes conducts a back-to-back comparison to understand whether its major upgrade actually works. Russell will start Sunday's race from the back of the grid after taking a fresh power unit following his engine failure five laps from the end in Malaysia, but he can still fight for pole in Saturday's sprint race — a first for Singapore.
Conditions were punishing and oddly timed: the daylight session ran in smoky haze drifting from Indonesian fires, with track temperatures at 53 degrees and humidity at 63 percent. Organisers have declared a heat hazard, meaning drivers can opt for cooling vests. Nico Hulkenberg stopped his Audi at the end of the pit lane to round out an eventful hour ahead of sprint qualifying under the lights.
