Ronaldo Provisionally Suspended by Portugal FA After National Team Walkout

The Portuguese Football Federation has moved against Cristiano Ronaldo, initiating disciplinary proceedings against the 40-year-old forward over his dramatic walkout on the national team, according to a statement reported by Lisbon newspaper A Bola. The federation said proceedings were opened on October 9 to examine the facts reported on October 7, and that a non-automatic preventive suspension was determined, with the case given urgent status. On October 10 the proceedings were forwarded to the FPF's disciplinary instruction committee, with details kept from the public until the investigation ends. Ronaldo missed Portugal's two subsequent fixtures, wins over Denmark and Norway that left them top of Group A4 with four straight victories, sparking speculation his international career could be over. Head coach Jorge Jesus left the door open after the Norway win, saying the veteran forward would be welcomed back if he wants to return. The saga took another turn when Ronaldo returned to Al Nassr and scored his 980th career goal against Diriyah on Friday in his first appearance since the walkout, having reportedly apologised for his actions while asking the federation to punish him without leniency.
