Rohit and Kohli Return as India Bring New Faces Into West Indies ODI Squad
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are back in India’s ODI squad for the West Indies series, but there are some fresh names in the group too. Shubman Gill will lead the side as India continue mixing experience with younger players.

India have named their squad for the West Indies ODI series, and there’s actually a lot to talk about with this one.
Of course, the first two names everyone is going to notice are Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
They’re both back in the ODI squad.
And honestly, whenever those two are involved, most of the attention is going to be on them. They’ve been such a huge part of Indian cricket for so long that even now, with younger players coming through, their names still completely change the feeling around a series.
But this squad isn’t only about Rohit and Kohli coming back.
There are some new faces in there too, and that might actually be the more interesting part in the long run.
Naman Dhir and Auqib Nabi have been given opportunities in the ODI group. For both of them, this is a big moment. Getting your name into an India squad is already difficult enough. Now the question is whether they get a chance on the field and what they can do with it.
That’s why this West Indies series could be pretty useful for India.
You’ve got players who have been through almost everything in international cricket, and then you’ve got guys who are still trying to make their name at this level.
That mix can be really interesting.
Shubman Gill will captain the ODI side, with KL Rahul as his vice-captain.
Gill being in charge is another thing worth watching. He’s already one of the biggest names in this newer generation of Indian players, but captaining a side with people like Rohit and Kohli around him is a different kind of experience.
There’s experience everywhere else too.
Ravindra Jadeja is there. Kuldeep Yadav is there. Mohammed Siraj is there.
So India definitely aren’t going into this series with some completely experimental team.
It feels more like they’re trying to find a balance.
Keep the players they already trust, give some new guys a chance, and see what works.
And sometimes these are the series where somebody suddenly makes a name for himself.
A player gets one opportunity because somebody is rested or the team wants to try something different. He has one great innings, takes three or four wickets, and suddenly everyone is talking about whether he should stay in the team.
That’s probably what makes the newer names worth keeping an eye on.
The first ODI is scheduled for September 27 in Thiruvananthapuram.
After that, India and West Indies move to Guwahati for the second match on September 30, before the series finishes in New Chandigarh on October 3.
Three matches isn’t a massive series, so there won’t be much time for players to settle in.
If somebody gets an opportunity, they may need to take it pretty quickly.
India have also announced their plans for the T20I series, where Shreyas Iyer will lead the team and Tilak Varma will be his vice-captain.
But for the ODI side, a lot of eyes are going to come straight back to Rohit and Kohli.
People will want to see how they look, what kind of form they’re in and how they fit into an Indian team that continues to change around them.
At the same time, it would probably be a mistake to only watch those two.
The younger players are getting their chance for a reason.
India have plenty of talent waiting behind their established stars, and every series gives the selectors a little more information about who might be ready for a bigger role.
That’s really what makes this squad interesting.
It’s not completely old and it’s not completely new.
It’s somewhere in the middle.
And by the end of these three matches against West Indies, we might know a little more about where India want to go next.
