Real Madrid Thrash RB Leipzig 4-1 to Keep Perfect Champions League Start

Real Madrid kept their perfect Champions League record intact on Wednesday night, sweeping aside RB Leipzig 4-1 at home to make it three wins from three in the competition under Jose Mourinho. Leipzig were the brighter side for much of the first half, and only Thibaut Courtois — with sharp saves to deny Christopher Nkunku and Romulo — kept Madrid level. The breakthrough came two minutes before the break when Bernardo Silva reacted quickest inside the box after Arda Guler's deflected effort squirmed through goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt's legs. It was Silva's first goal for Madrid since his summer arrival from Manchester City. Madrid took control after the restart. Vandevoordt brilliantly turned Federico Valverde's drive around the post, but he was beaten again when Guler bundled home Mbappe's header across goal. Mbappe, who had earlier rattled the side netting from Jude Bellingham's cutback, curled a superb late finish in from the edge of the box for his 12th goal in 12 appearances this season. Leipzig grabbed a consolation through Tidiam Gomis, but any hope of a comeback lasted barely two minutes — Yan Diomande, the £120 million summer signing from Leipzig, smashed a spectacular volley past his former club to seal it. Madrid now turn their attention to Sunday's first Clasico of the season against Barcelona, before traveling to Greece to face AEK Athens on November 4.
