Rayo Vallecano Match Abandoned After Paper-Plane Protest Halts Athletic Bilbao Clash

Rayo Vallecano's LaLiga meeting with Athletic Bilbao was abandoned on Saturday after home supporters at the Estadio de Vallecas threw paper planes and small rubber balls onto the pitch in an organised protest against the club's owner, Raúl Martín Presa.

The fixture had been billed as a homecoming. It was Rayo's first league game at Vallecas this season after the ground was closed over serious safety deficiencies found in an audit, forcing the club to stage its first three home matches at Leganés' Butarque stadium in front of some of the lowest attendances in LaLiga history.

The protest ignited in the 13th minute, the moment Rayo's ultras traditionally chant for Presa's departure. Hundreds of paper planes and rubber balls rained down, prompting the referee to suspend play and send the players to the dressing rooms. Stadium staff cleared the debris during a 15-minute stoppage and the PA system urged fans to stop, but when play resumed the objects kept coming and the referee called the game off for good with the score 0-0.

LaLiga later condemned the behaviour, saying it endangered safety and made the competition impossible to stage, and confirmed a new date would be announced. Athletic Bilbao said they would arrange refunds for travelling supporters.

The abandonment is the latest escalation in a long-running feud between Rayo's fanbase and Presa, who has owned the club since 2011 and stands accused by supporters of neglecting the stadium and the team.
