Rabada Ruled Out of First Test Against Australia as Nortje Earns Recall
South Africa will be without pace spearhead Kagiso Rabada for Friday's first Test against Australia in Durban, with the hamstring injury that sidelined him since May forcing him out; Anrich Nortje returns for his first Test in almost four years.

South Africa have suffered a seismic blow on the eve of the first Test against Australia, with pace spearhead Kagiso Rabada ruled out of the Durban clash. Captain Temba Bavuma confirmed at Thursday's press conference that Rabada, still working back from the hamstring injury that has kept him out since May, will sit out the series opener that begins at Kingsmead on Friday. Bavuma said management took the conservative route, giving the 73-Test veteran extra recovery time rather than risking a breakdown with two more Tests to come. The Proteas remain hopeful Rabada will be fit for the remainder of the series, and he trained with the squad on Thursday before the call was made. In his absence, South Africa have turned to raw pace and spin. Anrich Nortje returns for his first Test in almost four years, with Bavuma hailing the 150km/h quick's X-factor. Simon Harmer joins Keshav Maharaj in a twin-spin attack on a Kingsmead surface expected to take turn. The hosts are also without Lungi Ngidi, nursing his own hamstring problem. Rabada's absence robs the contest of one of its great rivalries — his 340 wickets at 22.03 include 23 in the ill-tempered 2018 home series — but Bavuma backed his reshaped attack to strike first in a rematch of last year's World Test Championship final at Lord's, which South Africa won.
