Qualifier Kawa Stuns No. 5 Seed Bencic to Set Up Dream Quarterfinal With World No. 1 Rybakina
Polish qualifier Katarzyna Kawa beat fifth-seeded Belinda Bencic 7-5, 6-2 in Ningbo on Thursday for the biggest win of her career, earning a quarterfinal clash with world No. 1 Elena Rybakina.

Katarzyna Kawa has waited 33 years for a win like this. The Polish qualifier produced the biggest result of her career on Thursday, defeating No. 5 seed Belinda Bencic 7-5, 6-2 in one hour and 43 minutes to reach the quarterfinals of the Ningbo Open.
Ranked No. 128, Kawa came through qualifying and then dismantled a top-20 opponent for the first time in her life. She fired 31 winners, created 15 break points and converted five of them to knock out the Swiss world No. 14, who never found an answer once the Pole settled. It is the first WTA 500 quarterfinal of Kawa's career and her first Tour-level last-eight appearance on hard courts.
"I felt pressure all the time from the beginning until the end," Kawa said in her on-court interview. "I think the key was that I stayed brave and I made really good shots on important points and that got me through to the finish line."
The reward could hardly be bigger. Kawa will face defending champion and world No. 1 Elena Rybakina in Friday's quarterfinals — their first meeting — after Rybakina advanced when Polina Kudermetova retired injured down 5-0 after just 30 minutes on court.
For Bencic, the loss extends a worrying slide. She has not won back-to-back matches since the Toronto quarterfinals in early August, and she is set to lose the 500 points from her Tokyo title last year when rankings update next week.
