Ponga in Line for Stunning Semi-Final Return as Kiwis Prepare for Tonga Showdown
Kalyn Ponga is reportedly set to complete a remarkable recovery from a fractured arm and return at fullback for New Zealand's Rugby League World Cup semi-final against Tonga in Newcastle on Saturday, just 17 days after surgery had seemingly ended his tournament.

Kalyn Ponga could be back in a New Zealand jersey far sooner than anyone expected. The star fullback fractured his arm against Australia 17 days ago and underwent surgery, an injury that appeared to end his Rugby League World Cup campaign on the spot. According to a report from The Daily Telegraph's David Riccio, however, Ponga is now in line to play in the Kiwis' semi-final against Tonga on Saturday, November 7, at McDonald Jones Stadium in Newcastle. Barring any setback during the week, he would replace Keano Kini at fullback, with Kini reverting to the interchange bench. The news is a major boost for a New Zealand side that reached the last four with a 78-0 thrashing of Fiji. Official team lists are due to be confirmed on Tuesday morning, so Ponga's return remains reported rather than confirmed for now, and coach Stacey Jones has previously said only that Ponga had trained during the week and that they would wait and see. But if it holds, the Kiwis will head into the biggest game of their tournament with their first-choice fullback back in the fold, against a Tonga side that has already secured its own place in the semi-finals.
