The Philadelphia Phillies are in the mix for one of the most intriguing young arms on the international market. According to insider Francys Romero, 18-year-old Japanese phenom Shoki Oda will meet with several major league clubs in the coming hours, with the Dodgers, Yankees and Phillies among those named. Oda announced in mid-October that he intends to play in the United States, skipping the Nippon Professional Baseball draft to chase his MLB dream instead. Because of his age he has not been posted by a Japanese club, but he is eligible for international free agency and could sign from January 15, 2027, when the new international signing period opens, unless that date is postponed. If he does not sign with a professional team, attending an American university is his other option. For the Phillies, the interest fits a club already built around a strong rotation featuring Zack Wheeler, Cristopher Sanchez, Aaron Nola, Jesus Luzardo and Andrew Painter. Adding a teenage arm with Oda's upside would be a long-term play rather than an instant fix, but the competition will be fierce: every big-market club with an eye on the next Japanese star is expected to make its pitch before the signing window opens.
