Pat Murphy Completes Three-Peat as Sporting News' NL Manager of the Year

Brewers skipper Pat Murphy won the Sporting News NL Manager of the Year award for the third straight season — a first in the National League — while the White Sox's Will Venable took the AL honor after Chicago's remarkable turnaround.

Pat Murphy Completes Three-Peat as Sporting News' NL Manager of the Year

Pat Murphy stopped the Los Angeles Dodgers from three-peating, then completed a three-peat of his own. The Milwaukee Brewers manager was named the Sporting News' National League Manager of the Year for the third consecutive season on Thursday, becoming the first NL manager to win the award three years in a row since Bobby Cox (2002-05) and the first manager overall since Kevin Cash (2019-21). Murphy has now won it in each of his first three seasons as a full-time big-league manager.

The honor caps a stunning campaign: Milwaukee won a franchise-record 103 games, ran away with the NL Central, swept the two-time defending champion Dodgers in the NLCS, and is playing the Tampa Bay Rays in the World Series starting Friday. Since Murphy took over, the Brewers are 293-193 in the regular season — the best mark in all of baseball, even ahead of the big-spending Dodgers.

Murphy is also the favorite to win the Baseball Writers' Association of America Manager of the Year award, announced November 10; no manager has ever three-peated that honor.

In the American League, White Sox manager Will Venable earned the nod after leading Chicago from a modern-record 121 losses in 2024 to an 84-78 record and its first playoff berth since 2021. Venable, 43, is the first White Sox manager to win it since Ozzie Guillén in 2005.
