Orioles Ready to Shake Up Roster but Alonso Is Going Nowhere

Baltimore is open to trading almost anyone this winter as it hunts for pitching and outfield help, but Pete Alonso is off the table after a 43-homer first season with the club.

Orioles Ready to Shake Up Roster but Alonso Is Going Nowhere

The Baltimore Orioles are preparing for a major shake-up this winter, but one name is not up for discussion. According to MLB Network's Matt Vasgersian, Baltimore is open to trading almost anyone on the roster in search of rotation and outfield help — with one clear exception: Pete Alonso. Alonso delivered exactly what the Orioles hoped for in his first season in Baltimore, hitting 43 home runs and driving in 113 runs while posting an .885 OPS. The 31-year-old anchored a lineup that badly needed his power, and the club sees him as central to its plans despite the five-year, $155 million contract he carries into next season. He turns 32 before the 2027 campaign begins, but Baltimore believes his production still justifies the deal. The willingness to deal comes after a disappointing year. Baltimore entered 2026 expecting another serious push toward the postseason after playoff trips in 2023 and 2024, but instead finished 79-82, fourth in the American League East, and missed October entirely. With Jared Banner now in place as general manager, the front office is turning the page. Pitching is the clearest need. Orioles starters finished with a 4.24 ERA, 17th in the majors, and three veteran arms — Trevor Rogers, Zach Eflin and Chris Bassitt — have reached free agency. Brandon Young emerged as a bright spot with a 3.56 ERA across 156.2 innings, but Baltimore needs more. Outfield names linked with the club include Seiya Suzuki, Steven Kwan and Randy Arozarena, while William Contreras and Drew Rasmussen have also been mentioned as possible trade targets.
