Norris Admits Title Defence Has Fallen Flat as McLaren Slips to Fourth-Fastest
Lando Norris has conceded his first season as reigning world champion has gone badly, admitting McLaren are now only the fourth-fastest team on the grid.

Lando Norris has delivered a brutally honest verdict on his season as reigning world champion, admitting his title defence has fallen flat. Speaking casually on a stream this week, the McLaren driver accepted that both he and Max Verstappen are now mathematically out of the 2026 championship fight, with Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli on the verge of sealing the crown in Mexico. Norris was characteristically dry about his campaign, saying it was not the best defence of a championship in his career but that there was little more he could do in Formula 1. His deeper concern is the car itself: McLaren, he said, have slipped to being effectively the fourth-fastest team as rivals have developed more effectively through the season. The latest upgrades are working, Norris insisted, but not in the areas where the car is weakest. Slow corners remain the team's Achilles heel, with the rear end and low-speed handling a long-standing problem that has only grown more costly as the season has worn on. Team-mate Oscar Piastri has voiced similar frustrations about extracting consistent performance from an increasingly difficult machine. Fifth place in Austin, Norris argued, was about the maximum available on the day, and he was happy to have got everything out of it even if the result itself sounded modest.
