No. 1 Miami Survives UNC Scare 38-35 After Onside Kick Drama
Top-ranked Miami held off North Carolina 38-35 in a Halloween thriller in Chapel Hill, surviving two wiped-out Tar Heels onside kick recoveries.

The number one team in college football needed every break in Chapel Hill on Halloween night, as Miami survived a furious North Carolina rally to win 38-35 and protect its unbeaten season. The Hurricanes looked in control at times, with Darian Mensah throwing three touchdown passes, two of them to Malachi Toney, and Mark Fletcher scoring three times. But North Carolina, coached by Bill Belichick, refused to go away. Quarterback Billy Edwards threw a career-high four touchdown passes and passed 300 yards for the first time in a Tar Heels uniform, and with just under seven minutes left UNC had the ball needing a touchdown to retake the lead. Instead Miami's defence delivered a strip-sack that sucked the life out of Kenan Stadium, and the Hurricanes scored on the ensuing drive to restore control. The drama was not over: UNC scored again with 1:38 left, then recovered consecutive onside kicks, only for penalties to wipe both out, and Miami recovered the third and final attempt to run out the clock. The Tar Heels fell to 4-4, while Miami stayed perfect and kept its grip on the top ranking heading into the final stretch of the regular season.
