Liverpool twice took the lead at Sukru Saracoglu Stadium and twice watched it disappear, before Fenerbahce struck decisively in the closing stages to claim a memorable 3-2 Champions League victory on Wednesday evening. Trey Nyoni gave the visitors a deserved first-half lead with his first senior professional goal, finishing a loose ball in the area in the 25th minute after a deep delivery caused confusion in the home defence. The advantage lasted only four minutes, as Mason Greenwood's deflected free kick from around 20 yards wrong-footed Alisson to level the score. Liverpool regained control after the break and went ahead again when substitute Alexander Isak met Cody Gakpo's cross with a header at his first touch. Once again the response was immediate: Archie Brown arrived unmarked at the back post to convert a N'Golo Kante delivery from a short corner. Then, with a little over ten minutes remaining, Muriqi met a deep ball following a short throw-in and headed home to turn the game around completely. Liverpool pushed for a late equaliser through half-chances for Gakpo and Isak, but Fenerbahce held firm. The result handed Liverpool their first defeat of this season's league phase and gave Dirk Kuyt's side a famous night in Istanbul.
