Mitchell's Game-Saving Catch Seals Brewers' NLCS Trip in 3-1 Game 4 Win Over Padres
Garrett Mitchell drove in a run, scored another, and robbed Manny Machado of a game-tying homer at the center-field wall as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the San Diego Padres 3-1 in NLDS Game 4 to win the series 3-1 and set up an NLCS rematch with the Dodgers.

SAN DIEGO — The Milwaukee Brewers are going back to the National League Championship Series, and they have Garrett Mitchell to thank for it. The Brewers closed out the San Diego Padres with a 3-1 victory in Game 4 of the NLDS at Petco Park, taking the series three games to one and earning a rematch with the Los Angeles Dodgers — the team that swept them out of the 2025 NLCS. Mitchell was the night's undeniable star. He drove in the game's first run with an RBI single in the third inning off Padres starter Walker Buehler, tripled and scored in the fifth on Jackson Chourio's RBI single, then delivered the defensive play of the series in the eighth. With Fernando Tatis Jr. aboard and the Padres down two, Manny Machado launched a deep fly to center off Abner Uribe that looked certain to tie the game. Mitchell ranged back, stood with his back to the wall, and snatched the ball away from grasping fans in the front row. Chourio, still only 22, set a new Brewers franchise record with his 17th career postseason RBI. Aaron Ashby earned his first career playoff win with three scoreless innings of middle relief, and Milwaukee's bullpen capped a stunning series in which it allowed just one earned run in 19 innings. Trevor Megill struck out two in a perfect ninth for his second save. Tatis Jr.'s third-inning solo homer off Robert Gasser was the Padres' only answer; they did not record another hit until the ninth. It was the only game of the series not decided by a single run — neither team ever led by more than two runs in the entire four-game set. NLCS Game 1 is Sunday, October 11, in Milwaukee.
