Michail Antonio has returned to English football, signing a one-year deal with Watford after a journey that looked much bigger than football following his serious car crash in 2024.

Some football moves are about money, trophies or getting a bigger opportunity.

This one feels a little different.

Michail Antonio is back in English football.

Watford have signed the 36-year-old striker on a free transfer, giving him a one-year deal and another chance to play in England. And considering everything that has happened to him over the last couple of years, just seeing Antonio back here means something.

Back in December 2024, Antonio was involved in a really serious car crash while travelling home from training. He broke his thigh bone in four places and needed surgery.

At that point football probably wasn’t the first thing on anybody’s mind.

He eventually left West Ham in August 2025 after his contract wasn’t renewed. It was the end of a huge part of his career. Antonio left as West Ham’s all-time leading Premier League goalscorer.

He didn’t stop there though.

Earlier this year he went to Qatar and joined Al-Sailiya, his first club after recovering from the crash. Now, a few months later, he’s coming back to England.

And Watford are giving him that opportunity.

Antonio still needs some time to get completely up to speed, but he has already talked about wanting to help the club succeed.

It’s actually kind of funny too — he mentioned that he’s scored a few goals against Watford over the years.

Now he’ll be trying to score them for Watford.

After everything he’s been through, that’s not a bad way to start another chapter.
