McDavid's Five-Point Night Joins Gretzky Club as Oilers Edge Hurricanes 6-5 in Shootout
Connor McDavid forced overtime with a late goal and finished with two goals and three assists as Edmonton beat Carolina 6-5 in a shootout Thursday night.

Connor McDavid delivered another night for the history books on Thursday, posting two goals and three assists to drag the Edmonton Oilers past the Carolina Hurricanes 6-5 in a shootout at Rogers Place.
McDavid now has 31 points through the season's first 10 games, joining Mario Lemieux, Mike Bossy and Wayne Gretzky as the only players in NHL history with 30 or more points in 10 or fewer games. He forced overtime himself, tying the game with 1:28 left after the Oilers pulled Devon Levi — the puck deflected in off Kotkaniemi's skate for McDavid's eighth goal of the season.
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins was the lone scorer in the shootout on his season debut, returning from a lower-body injury suffered in camp, and added a goal and an assist. In the process he became the Oilers' franchise leader with 16 seasons played. Leon Draisaitl matched McDavid with two goals and three assists, while Levi made 22 saves.
Carolina got goals from Blake, Aho, Jarvis — making his season debut after shoulder surgery — Stankoven and Valimaki, with Brandon Bussi stopping 16 shots. The win was Edmonton's third straight and seventh in eight games, lifting them to 8-1-1, while the defending-champion Hurricanes fell to 8-2-2 with their second loss in three.
