The 2026 MotoGP title fight swung violently at Phillip Island on Saturday. Marc Marquez seized a breathtaking sprint victory in front of a record Saturday crowd, and with it the world championship lead, after Jorge Martin crashed out of their duel for the win on lap eight.

Marquez converted pole into the holeshot, but Martin charged from fourth to second and the pair traded the lead repeatedly in a battle fought at the absolute limit. Martin made his move at Turn 1 on lap eight, Marquez cut back at Turn 2 — and moments later the Aprilia rider lost the front at Turn 8, tumbling through the gravel at around 225 km/h. Martin was taken to the medical centre and later ruled out of Sunday's Grand Prix with a broken right wrist.

With his rival gone, Marquez held off brother Alex Marquez by 0.323 seconds, with Fabio Di Giannantonio completing an all-Ducati podium just 0.590s back. It was Marquez's ninth sprint win of the season and the 24th of his career. The result turns Martin's two-point advantage into a 10-point lead for the reigning champion, 365 points to 355.

Marco Bezzecchi recovered from 12th to finish fourth, with Pedro Acosta fifth and Jack Miller eighth — the Australian's first sprint points of 2026 in front of his home crowd. The weekend also carries extra weight: with 45,858 fans setting a Saturday attendance record, Phillip Island bows out as Australia's MotoGP home before the race moves to Adelaide in 2027.
