Marquez Crashes, Then Storms to Pole at Soaked Phillip Island as Two-Point Title Fight Ignites
Marc Marquez brushed off an early qualifying crash to grab a stunning Australian Grand Prix pole at a drenched Phillip Island, outpacing his brother Alex by nearly 1.5 seconds while championship leader Jorge Martin could only manage fourth.

The weather turned the Australian Grand Prix qualifying into a lottery at Phillip Island, and Marc Marquez nearly threw away his ticket in the first minutes of Q2. The defending champion lost the front of his Ducati at Turn 4 and slid across the grass, walking away unhurt but without a lap on the board. He sprinted through the Ducati garage, jumped on his spare bike, and produced a 1:34.203 that nobody could touch — sealing his fourth pole of the season by an enormous 1.494 seconds. His brother Alex Marquez took second for Gresini, with LCR Honda's Johann Zarco — who had dragged himself through Q1 earlier in the day — completing the front row. The result was a blow for Aprilia's Jorge Martin. The championship leader, who heads Marquez by just two points with five rounds remaining, salvaged fourth at 1.577 seconds adrift on a circuit where he has taken pole on his last three visits. Martin's teammate Marco Bezzecchi, the Friday pace-setter, ended up ninth. Home favorite Jack Miller delighted the local crowd with fifth after fighting through Q1 on his Pramac Yamaha. The 13-lap sprint is set for Saturday afternoon, with the full 27-lap grand prix on Sunday — and the title fight is now balanced on a knife edge.
