Marquez Conquers Mandalika Chaos to Seize MotoGP Championship Lead
Marc Marquez won a wild Indonesian MotoGP sprint at Mandalika on Saturday to take the 2026 championship lead for the first time, as rival Jorge Martin's tyre gamble collapsed in the closing laps.

Marc Marquez is the new leader of the 2026 MotoGP world championship after a dramatic sprint-race victory at the Indonesian Grand Prix in Mandalika on Saturday.
The Ducati rider, the reigning champion, captured his eighth sprint win of the season in 19 minutes 37.125 seconds to move to 343 points — four clear of Aprilia's Jorge Martin. It completes a remarkable turnaround for Marquez, who sat 102 points behind Marco Bezzecchi after the Italian Grand Prix in May.
Chaos struck at the very first corner, when polesitter Raul Fernandez and Bezzecchi collided and crashed out together. Martin threaded through the mayhem from the second row and built a commanding lead, looking certain of victory until a looming tyre-pressure penalty forced his hand. With five laps remaining, the 2024 champion deliberately let Marquez through to stay legal, then pushed hard to retake the position — only to run wide on the penultimate lap and miss the podium entirely, finishing fourth.
Trackhouse Aprilia's Ai Ogura inherited second, just over half a second behind the winner, while VR46's Fabio Di Giannantonio took third on his birthday. Alex Marquez finished fifth, Pedro Acosta sixth despite a long-lap penalty, with Francesco Bagnaia eighth and Fabio Quartararo ninth.
Bezzecchi's first-corner exit was doubly costly: he now trails Marquez by 59 points in the title race with the Grand Prix itself still to come on Sunday.
