Makhachev vs Prates Pulled From UFC 336 as Welterweight Title Fight Scratched
Islam Makhachev will not defend his welterweight title against Carlos Prates at UFC 336 in Toronto, with the promotion now hunting for a new headliner for its January return to Scotiabank Arena.

Islam Makhachev's planned welterweight title defense against Carlos Prates is off. According to a report from Ag. Fight on Friday, the anticipated matchup has been pulled from UFC 336, which was scheduled for January at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, and the UFC is now searching for a new headliner for its return to Canada.
The news is not entirely a surprise. Makhachev's own manager told media earlier this week that the Prates fight was not close to being finalized, despite earlier reports locking the bout in for Toronto. UFC 335 had already been ruled out for the pairing after Charles Oliveira versus Diego Lopes was confirmed as that event's headliner.
Ramadan looms large over the champion's schedule. Makhachev traditionally avoids competing during the holy month, which makes February his earliest realistic return window before a months-long break from competition. The Dagestani champion last fought at UFC 330, where he successfully defended the title against Ian Machado Garry after claiming the belt from Jack Della Maddalena earlier in 2026.
Prates, the surging Brazilian contender, could now face an alternative opponent, potentially for an interim title while Makhachev's return is postponed indefinitely. Makhachev has not publicly stated when he intends to defend next.
