Mahmud's Six-For Bowls West Indies Out for 356 as Shadman's Injury Adds to Bangladesh's Worries
Hasan Mahmud finished with six for 90 as West Indies were bowled out for 356 on day two of the second Test in Sylhet, but Bangladesh's fightback was soured by opener Shadman Islam being taken to hospital with a twisted ankle.

Hasan Mahmud has made a habit of turning Test matches with the new ball, and on the second morning in Sylhet he did it again — this time coming within one delivery of a hat-trick and finishing with six wickets as West Indies were bowled out for 356. It was a morning that belonged to Bangladesh's fast bowler, but the hosts will begin their reply with a shadow over the dressing room after opener Shadman Islam was taken to hospital with an ankle injury. West Indies had resumed on 235 for four, with Amir Jangoo unbeaten on 111 after rescuing his side from 27 for three on the opening day. The left-hander carried on where he had left off, reaching 133 from 212 balls with 13 fours and two sixes, and for a while it looked as though Bangladesh would be chasing leather all day. Then Mahmud took the second new ball at the start of the 81st over, and the match tilted. Coming round the wicket and bringing the ball back into the batter, Mahmud drew Jangoo into a misjudged leave that cost him his off stump. Off the very next delivery, captain Roston Chase was caught behind for a golden duck, and suddenly Mahmud was on a hat-trick as Joshua Bishop walked out to face the ball. Bishop was struck on the pads, Bangladesh went up in a huge appeal, and for a breathless moment it looked as though history was repeating itself — Mahmud had taken a hat-trick against Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi only a few weeks ago, the first by a Bangladeshi seamer in Test cricket. This time the decision was reviewed and overturned, and the hat-trick slipped away. Justin Greaves had battled to a patient 51 from 112 balls before Mehidy Hasan Miraz bowled him, and the tail offered little resistance after lunch. Jomel Warrican was left stranded on 27 not out as Mehidy trapped Jayden Seales lbw for 15 to end the innings at 356 in 106.4 overs. Mahmud finished with six for 90, the pick of the attack, with Mehidy taking two for 82 and Taskin Ahmed two for 90. Wickham's 61 had done the early heavy lifting, but a total that had looked like 400-plus ended well short of it. The worry for Bangladesh came in the field. In the 78th over Shadman Islam chased a Jangoo stroke towards fine leg, twisted his left ankle, and could not continue. He was taken to hospital for an MRI scan and further assessment. "He twisted his left ankle and was taken to hospital for an MRI scan," BCB physio Bayzidul Islam said in a statement, and a member of the team management told Cricbuzz that Shadman is unlikely to take any further part in the ongoing Test. Because the injury is unrelated to the head, Bangladesh cannot bring in a concussion substitute, so they will effectively bat one man short if Shadman cannot return. That is a blow for a side already trailing 1-0 in the two-match series after West Indies won the first Test in Mirpur by eight wickets. Bangladesh opened their reply with Tanzid Hasan at the crease, still 356 behind, and with the pitch offering the bowlers encouragement, the hosts will need their batting to hold firm without their first-choice opener. Mahmud has given them the opening they needed. Whether the rest of the side can take advantage of it is the question that will decide this Test.
