Los Angeles to Honor Russell Westbrook on Friday for 18-Year Career

The city of Los Angeles will formally honor Russell Westbrook on Friday, Oct. 9, recognizing the nine-time All-Star for his 18-year playing career and his long-standing community work across the city. City councilwoman Heather Hutt is set to present Westbrook with a Council certificate during a ceremony at L.A. City Hall beginning at 10 a.m. local time.

Westbrook announced his retirement in August, closing out a career that took him through Oklahoma City, Houston, Washington, the Lakers and Clippers, Denver, and Sacramento. The 2017 league MVP retires as the NBA's all-time leader in triple-doubles with 209, alongside two scoring titles and nine All-Star selections.

The honor leans as much on his off-court impact as his playing resume. The Los Angeles native founded the Russell Westbrook Why Not? Foundation in 2012 to support underserved communities in the L.A. area, and his infrastructure and housing initiatives in the city have continued into his post-playing chapter. For a player whose intensity made him one of the league's most polarizing figures, the City Hall ceremony marks a hometown farewell as he transitions into life after basketball.
