LIV Golf's Rescue Plan Crumbles as BC Partners Walks Away

LIV Golf's attempt at a rescue appears to be collapsing, with BC Partners dropping its bid to relaunch the breakaway league after failing to secure enough player commitments. The firm had agreed on October 5 to become lead investor in a relaunched "LIV 2.0", with up to $300 million in funding, after LIV filed for bankruptcy protection in New Jersey in September when Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund ended its financial backing following the 2026 season. But LIV could not lock down contractual commitments from its biggest names, with more than a dozen notable golfers, including Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton, publicly saying they would not join the new venture, and others such as Bryson DeChambeau, Dustin Johnson, Cam Smith and Joaquin Niemann also unsigned. The Athletic reports LIV is now preparing to wind down operations, although the league says it plans to keep operating while it reorganises. The next step comes on Thursday, when LIV appears at a US bankruptcy court hearing in Trenton, New Jersey, on contracts, leases and assets. What began in 2022 with more than $5 billion of Saudi backing now faces possible liquidation.
