Lions Lock Hyron Andrews Dies at 31 on Eve of Champions Cup Debut; La Rochelle Clash Goes Ahead in His Honour

Lions lock Hyron Andrews has died at the age of 31 at the team's hotel in France, on the eve of the South African club's debut in the European Champions Cup against La Rochelle. Andrews was found unconscious in a shower cubicle at the team's hotel on the Île de Ré, where the Lions had been staying since Tuesday. Emergency services were called shortly after 10am on Friday and attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful. The former Sharks and Sale Sharks second-row forward joined the Lions this season after two years with Sale in England, making 45 appearances, and had played in all three of the club's United Rugby Championship matches. He represented the Durban-based Sharks from 2015 to 2024 and played twice for the Junior Springboks in 2015, but was never capped by South Africa's senior side. "The Lions Rugby Company is deeply saddened by the passing of player Hyron Andrews," the club said in a statement, extending condolences to his wife Maiglin and their two young sons, Hendrix and Emerson. Chief executive Rudolf Straeuli said the loss would be felt profoundly by teammates, coaches and supporters. Tributes poured in from across the game, including from Sale Sharks, the Sharks and the Bulls. The Lions confirmed Saturday's Champions Cup debut at Stade Marcel Deflandre will go ahead "in honour of Hyron," with a moment of silence observed before every match this weekend. His death comes exactly ten years after Munster head coach Anthony Foley died suddenly in France before a European tie, adding a poignant echo to the tragedy.
