Kucherov Asks for Trade as Lightning Refuse to Deal Reigning MVP
Reigning Hart Trophy winner Nikita Kucherov has asked the Tampa Bay Lightning for a trade, but general manager Julien BriseBois says the club has no intention of moving him.

Reigning Hart Trophy winner Nikita Kucherov has requested a trade from the Tampa Bay Lightning, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported on Friday evening. Kucherov informed his teammates of his decision on the team's flight to Nashville, where the Lightning play the Predators on Saturday, after meeting with general manager Julien BriseBois alongside his agent, Dan Milstein. Kucherov, 33, has told the club he will not re-sign when his contract expires at the end of the season. He is in the final year of an eight-year, $76 million deal carrying a $9.5 million cap hit, and holds a modified no-trade clause that allows him to submit a 10-team list of approved destinations. The exact reasons for his decision remain unclear, though reports say the two sides are far apart in contract negotiations. BriseBois responded with a statement on the club's X account on Friday night: "We are aware of the media reports regarding the future of Nikita Kucherov with the Lightning. We unequivocally have no intention of trading Nikita." Milstein told ESPN he would "stand by Nikita unconditionally" but offered no further comment. Kucherov has four goals and 15 points in 12 games this season, and only last week passed Steven Stamkos as the franchise's all-time leading scorer.
