India's women's team will start their landmark series against Zimbabwe without pace spearhead Renuka Singh Thakur after the BCCI confirmed she has been replaced by Jintimani Kalita.

The board announced on Thursday, October 22, that Renuka will continue her rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence as she builds up her bowling workload for the 50-over format. In her place, young all-rounder Kalita earns a recall for the three-match ODI series.

The timing is significant. The series opener is set for Friday, October 23, at the BCA Stadium in Vadodara — the first time India Women and Zimbabwe Women have ever faced each other in a bilateral series. Smriti Mandhana will also lead the side as full-time ODI captain for the first time.

Kalita, who has impressed for Mumbai Indians in the Women's Premier League, now gets her chance on the international stage after Renuka's withdrawal, with the squad set to be tested across the three matches in Vadodara.
