Jets Rule Out Garrett Wilson for Chiefs Trip as Concussion Keeps Star Receiver Sidelined

The New York Jets knew the news was coming, and on Friday morning Aaron Glenn said it out loud anyway: Garrett Wilson will not play against the Kansas City Chiefs. The star wide receiver, still in the league's concussion protocol, has been ruled out of Sunday's Week 9 trip to Arrowhead, leaving the Jets without their best offensive weapon for one of the toughest assignments on their schedule.

Wilson, 26, has not practised all week. He took a helmet-to-helmet hit late in the Jets' last game, a personal foul that drew a flag on the field and put him straight into the protocol afterwards, and he was listed as a non-participant on all three official practice days. There was no dramatic setback, no new injury — just a player who never cleared the steps the league requires before he can play again. Glenn delivered the verdict at his usual Friday media availability, and there was no hedging in it.

It is a heavy loss, and the numbers say why. Wilson has 43 catches for 527 yards and three touchdowns in eight games this season, and he is the one receiver on this roster who changes how a defence lines up. Take him away, and the Jets' passing game loses its focal point, its deep threat and its most reliable pair of hands, all at once. Against a Kansas City side sitting at 5-2 and defending its home turf, that is about as bad a time as it could happen.

The rest of Friday's injury news did little to soften the blow. Linebacker Trevin Wallace, battling a groin injury, is out as well. Cornerback Nahshon Wright, who practised the first two days before a back issue flared up, did not practise on Friday and is questionable. Pass rusher Joseph Ossai has been limited all week and is questionable, and defensive tackle Harrison Phillips, who missed the first two days before returning to full practice on Friday, is questionable too.

There was, at least, some good news buried in Glenn's update. Running back Breece Hall is set to play his first game since hurting his quad in the Week 3 loss to Detroit, a return the Jets have been waiting on for more than a month. Tight end Mason Taylor and rookie edge defender David Bailey were full participants on Friday and look good to go, and rookie VJ Payne is in line to play his first NFL game if he dresses on Sunday.

But none of that changes the shape of Sunday. The Jets are 2-6, on the road, in one of the loudest buildings in the league, and now without the receiver their whole offence is built around. Kickoff is 1pm ET, and for the first time this season, New York will have to find a way to move the ball without No. 5.
