Iyer's Maiden T20I Century Fires India to Eight-Wicket Rout of West Indies in Lucknow
Captain Shreyas Iyer smashed his maiden T20I century as India chased down 172 in just 14.4 overs to beat West Indies by eight wickets in the first T20I at Lucknow.

Shreyas Iyer produced a captain's innings for the ages as India stormed to an eight-wicket victory over West Indies in the first T20I at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Tuesday. Chasing 172 for victory, India completed the job in only 14.4 overs, with Iyer's blistering 102 not out off 43 balls the centerpiece of a dominant display. West Indies, put in to bat, were bowled out for 171 in 19.1 overs. They lost Shimron Hetmyer to a controversial run-out for just five after a sharp Iyer throw found him short of his ground, and early wickets in the powerplay left them reeling before Shai Hope (52 off 37) and Sherfane Rutherford (56 off 34) staged a recovery. India's chase started brightly despite losing Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson cheaply. Ishan Kishan's 37 off 27 set the tone, and Iyer took over from there, reaching his first T20 hundred in style — 10 fours and 6 sixes at a strike rate of 237. His unbeaten 137-run third-wicket stand with Kishan is the joint-highest third-wicket partnership for India in T20Is. Named player of the match, Iyer said the hundred came through naturally and praised the team's destructive mindset. The win gives India a 1-0 lead in the series, with Shai Hope admitting afterwards that the visitors simply did not post enough runs on a true Lucknow surface.
