India and West Indies Fined for Slow Over-Rate After Mullanpur Run-Fest

The ICC has penalised both India and the West Indies for maintaining slow over-rates in the third and final ODI of their series in New Chandigarh, played on Saturday. India were found to be four overs short of the required rate after time allowances, attracting a 20 percent fine on their match fee, while the tourists were two overs short and docked 10 percent.

Match referee Prakash Bhatt of the ICC International Panel imposed the sanctions under Article 2.22 of the Code of Conduct, which levies a five percent fine for every over a side fails to bowl in the allotted time. Both captains — Shubman Gill and Shai Hope — pleaded guilty and accepted the proposed penalties, so no formal hearings were required.

The contest itself was one for the ages. India posted 351 for 7, powered by KL Rahul's unbeaten 129 and Rohit Sharma's 92, but the West Indies chased it down in 48.2 overs thanks to captain Hope's majestic unbeaten 162. It was the visitors' second over-rate sanction of the year, following a fine against New Zealand in July.

The two sides now turn to a five-match T20I series, starting Tuesday in Lucknow.
