Home Hero Kym Stuns Top Seed Shelton in Basel Thriller

Swiss wild card Jerome Kym gave the Basel crowd the night it came for on Thursday, stunning top seed Ben Shelton 6-3, 6-7(4), 7-6(1) to reach the quarter-finals of the Swiss Indoors. Kym, playing in front of a home crowd that roared him through the deciding tiebreak, held his nerve when it mattered most, running away with the breaker 7-1 to close out the upset. Shelton, the tournament's top seed, had no answer in the opener as Kym took it 6-3, but the American fought back to level the match in a second-set tiebreak. The decider went the distance too, and this time it was the Swiss player who produced his best tennis under pressure, sealing one of the biggest wins of his career and a place in the last eight. It was a day of shocks across the draw in Basel. Valentin Vacherot also upset third seed Rafael Jodar to reach the quarter-finals, while second seed Arthur Fils came through his second-round test to advance. For Kym, though, the win stands alone: a wild card beating the top seed at his home event, in a third-set tiebreak, with a quarter-final now waiting.
