Henderson Reveals Hospital Stay After 'Unusual' Neurological Emergency

For more than a week, the only thing anyone knew about TreVeyon Henderson was a single word on an injury report: illness. He had been fine on the Wednesday, then he was not, and the Patriots' promising young running back simply disappeared from the team — out of practice, out of the game in Miami, out of sight. On Friday morning, Henderson finally told the world why, and the truth was more frightening than the one word had suggested.

"Recently, I experienced an unexpected and unusual medical emergency involving a series of unexplained neurological symptoms that required hospitalization for several days," the 24-year-old wrote in a statement posted on social media. He underwent extensive medical testing and evaluation, he said, and while the results came back "positive and reassuring," the cause of it all "remains unknown and unexplainable."

It is the kind of statement that stops a football conversation cold. Henderson, the Patriots' second-year back and the 38th overall pick in last year's draft, did not offer a diagnosis, because there is not one to offer yet. What he did describe was the aftermath: he is working closely with specialists and physical therapists, and the symptoms have affected his strength, his coordination, and some of his physical functions. "I am committed to doing everything necessary to return to full health," he wrote. "My health and long-term well-being remain my foremost priorities." He thanked his wife, his family, the Patriots organisation, his agent, his medical team, his team-mates, and everyone who had offered prayers, encouragement and support.

The timeline, pieced together from the injury reports, is short and stark. Henderson practised on the Wednesday before the Dolphins game, then appeared on the report on Thursday, October 29, listed with an illness. He missed New England's Week 8 win in Miami, and he has not practised since. On Friday, head coach Mike Vrabel confirmed he will also miss Sunday's home game against the Green Bay Packers, and he refused to put any kind of clock on the recovery. "I can't put a timeline on it," Vrabel said. "I don't think that's fair to anybody."

That is the honest answer, and it is also the hardest one for a team in the middle of a season to live with. The Patriots drafted Henderson to be their featured back of the future, and he had been growing into the role. Now the football questions — carries, snaps, the backfield rotation — have to wait behind the only one that matters, which is whether a 24-year-old athlete gets fully well after something nobody can yet explain. The testing, by his own account, is reassuring. The cause is not known. And for now, the Patriots will prepare for Green Bay without him, and without any idea of when he comes back.
