Gray Hits Open Market as Red Sox Mutual Option Falls Through
Sonny Gray is officially a free agent after his $30 million mutual option with Boston for 2027 was declined, pocketing a $10 million buyout.

Sonny Gray is officially a free agent. The right-hander's name appeared on the MLB Players Association's list of players who have resolved their club or mutual options, confirming that his $30 million mutual option with the Boston Red Sox for 2027 will not be exercised. Gray collects a $10 million buyout instead. There was never much surprise about the outcome. Mutual options are almost always declined by at least one side, and Gray, who agreed to waive his no-trade clause to approve the deal that sent him to Boston last November, now heads to the open market on the back of a very successful season, posting a 2.72 ERA across 29 starts for the Red Sox. One detail works in Gray's favour and against Boston: because he has already received a qualifying offer in the past, he cannot be issued another, so the Red Sox will receive no draft-pick compensation if he signs elsewhere. After a season that re-established him among the game's most reliable starters, Gray should be one of the most sought-after arms of an offseason already racing toward a likely December lockout.
