Glenn Maxwell Calls Time on International Career After 14 Years

Glenn Maxwell has announced his retirement from international cricket, closing the book on a 14-year Australia career defined by fearless batting and remarkable versatility. The 38-year-old revealed the decision on The Final Word podcast, confirming he will also step away from first-class and List A cricket for Victoria while remaining available for the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League, where his contract has been extended to the 2027-28 season. Maxwell had already retired from one-day internationals in June 2025 but kept himself available for Twenty20 cricket, playing at the 2026 T20 World Cup. Australia failed to progress past the group stage there, and the final match of that tournament, against Oman in February, proved to be his last game for his country. He took two wickets in that match and did not get a chance to bat. Across his international career Maxwell played seven Tests, 149 one-day internationals and 130 Twenty20 internationals, scoring 10 centuries and taking 136 wickets. His one-day tally of 3,990 runs and 2,897 runs in T20 internationals place him among Australia's most prolific white-ball players, and he won three World Cup titles: the ODI crowns of 2015 and 2023 and the T20 crown of 2021. His defining innings remains the unbeaten 201 from 128 balls against Afghanistan at the 2023 World Cup. Maxwell admitted he had held a small hope of a farewell game at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, but said he understood the direction Australia's selectors are taking with a younger squad. He cited managing his body carefully as a key factor in the timing of his decision.
