Flamingos Fly Into U-17 Women's World Cup Quarter-Finals With 2-1 Win Over Mexico

Nigeria's Flamingos are through to the quarter-finals of the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Mexico in their round-of-16 tie on Thursday at the Mohammed VI Football Academy in Salé, Morocco. Oluebube Umejiaku opened the scoring in the 40th minute, finishing inside the box five minutes before half-time for her third goal of the tournament, and Mary Dunstan doubled the advantage in the 71st minute with a powerful strike that put Nigeria firmly in control. Mexico refused to fold and pulled one back deep into stoppage time through Emily Delgado in the 90th minute plus ten, after a corner, setting up a tense finish — but the Flamingos held firm to secure a place in the last eight. The win continued an impressive run for Nigeria, who recovered from an opening group loss to Poland with victories over Puerto Rico and defending champions North Korea before beating Mexico, and it equalled their highest-ever number of wins in a single edition of the tournament. Nigeria will now face Venezuela in the quarter-finals on Sunday, November 1, after Venezuela upset Germany 1-0 in their own round-of-16 tie. The other quarter-finals confirmed on Thursday are Ghana against Japan, defending champions North Korea against the United States, and Brazil against China, with the winners of Nigeria's tie set to meet the winners of Brazil against China in the semi-finals.
