Edwards to Undergo Knee Surgery and Miss Up to Two Months in Timberwolves Blow

The Minnesota Timberwolves have been hit by a major injury blow, with superstar guard Anthony Edwards set to undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right knee and miss up to two months. ESPN's Shams Charania reported on Tuesday that Edwards will have the procedure on Thursday, with some reports suggesting the absence could stretch beyond two months depending on what doctors find during surgery.

The timing is cruel for both player and team. Edwards, 25, has been in outstanding form to start the season, averaging 33.3 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.5 assists through four games while shooting 48.1 percent from the field and 40 percent from three-point range for a Timberwolves side sitting at 3-1. He scored 47 points in Monday's outing against the Cleveland Cavaliers, his second game with at least 45 points this season, after being listed as questionable with the knee issue.

Edwards played through soreness and inflammation in the same knee during last season and the postseason, before suffering a left knee hyperextension and bone bruise in the first round of the playoffs. He took about two months off over the summer to rest without surgery, but the problem has returned. A lengthy absence would also put his eligibility for end-of-season honours at risk, with the 65-game threshold for MVP and All-NBA recognition now in doubt.
